Traces on A Color Field

This series allows me to combine the clarity of photography and the complexity of nature to create a language that is uniquely my own. One where the interaction of plants, the patterns and growth in community, is a form of knowledge beyond conscious understanding. It is not as far away from us as we may imagine. Our senses are built for this world.

The project started with meadows – their color, their texture, ethereality and palpability. In meadows there is a texture like comfort, but it is, ironically, intangible; translucent; just beyond reach. What if one steps just sideways and looks at the underlying structure? In this project I use digital means to extract those hues laying just beside the obvious, forming digital brush strokes as a reinterpretation of the nominally seen. This is paired with a color plane, sometimes opaque, sometimes translucent. The color plane allows the underlying structure of the meadow to visually diverge from the experience of a physical plane, to avoid concerns of what is physically above or below. I aim to abstract an essence: as a form of energy balanced, of calligraphy, of slow-motion dance, of communal interaction, of intense meaning.
